RETIME’s Latest Interview: Professor Xavier Romão on Why Seismic Sensors Matter

Why monitor buildings? Professor Xavier Romão discusses how the installation of seismic sensors can improve building safety assessments and support the development of more resilient cities.

In December 2025, Professor Romão and his research team from the University of Porto visited a primary school in Bairro da Boavista, Lisbon, together with the school director, representatives from Lisbon City Council, and RETIME project coordinators from ISTAR-Iscte. The visit focused on assessing the site where seismic sensors will be installed to monitor the building’s structural response to seismic activity over time.

The initiative represents an important step toward improving urban resilience. Through continuous structural monitoring, the project aims to better understand how buildings behave during earthquakes and support evidence-based safety assessments. If the building is confirmed to be structurally safe, it could potentially serve as a community shelter in the event of an emergency.

In this interview, Professor Romão also reflects on the broader importance of structural monitoring and the institutional commitment to building safer and more resilient cities.
