Zástranie Neighborhood (Žilina Municipality)

Location

Žilina, Slovakia, in the foothills of Straník Mountain

Population

~925 residents

Key Features

Suburban setting; predominantly privately owned residential housing; ageing infrastructure

OVERVIEW

Zástranie is located 8 kilometers northeast of Žilina, in the southern part of the Kysucká Highlands. Nestled in the scenic foothills of Straník Mountain, it exemplifies the challenges of rural-urban transition.

Aging infrastructure in both public and residential buildings remains a concern, especially as extreme weather events become more frequent and intense. Zástranie is particularly vulnerable to natural hazards such as landslides, heavy rainfall, heatwaves, and seismic activity.

Within this neighborhood, the Social Services Centre Straník serves as the pilot building for the RETIME project, primarily focused on enhancing quality of life and promoting the social integration of local residents with mental and physical disabilities.
